Just shortly after my 1-week adventure in Cambodia, the travel bug strikes again. I didn’t have much annual leave days left for the year so I thought I’ll do a weekend getaway (maybe take the day off on Monday) instead. I didn’t think it was possible but after researching on the Internet, you can actually climb Mount Kinabalu over a weekend!
Climbing to the summit of Mount Kinabalu is one of the items in my life list so I was determined to accomplish it.
The plan is to fly from Singapore to Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah, Malaysia on Friday evening, do the climb to a resthouse on Mount Kinabalu on Saturday, climb up to the summit of Mount Kinabalu on Sunday morning to catch the sunrise and back down to Kota Kinabalu, and then finally, fly back to Singapore on Monday. Simple!
Unlike the usual backpacking trips where I just fly into the country and find a way to visit tourist attractions, I decided to book a climbing package with Amazing Borneo Tours who was highly rated in travel forums because I only had a weekend to work with and I didn’t want to risk going to Kota Kinabalu only to find all the tour agencies fully booked.
I checked the websites of all budget airlines operating in Singapore that fly to Kota Kinabalu and identified AirAsia with the cheapest flight. After confirming the travel package with the tour agency, I went ahead and booked my flight. In this trip, I’m joined by my friend, S, who wanted to climb Mount Kinabalu as well. Booking a climbing tour package for 2 is cheaper than a single tour package so that helped us save some money there.
This could be one of the most expensive weekend getaway because Mount Kinabalu is the main tourist attraction in Sabah.
Now that everything is set, I just need to make sure I have the right gear. I have not travelled to many cold countries so my wardrobe is missing the right warm clothes.
Time to do some shopping!
